"Impatient discharge procedure on Ward 49"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Plastic Surgery & Burns (wards 45, 47, 48 & 49)

(as a relative),

My mother, a pensioner, was being discharged from Ward 49. The staff had been told there was no one available to collect her until after teatime as we are all working full time and were unable to take time off.

I myself work full time, I'm self employed, I have vertigo, arthritis and I'm on tamoxifen so have considerable joint pain and don't feel well enough to drive into Glasgow and back, so I was relying on either my husband who works upwards of 12 hours a day, or my adult children who don't finish work until after 5pm.

The staff's attitude was snippy at best, I was told she needed to be out of the ward as they needed the bed, fair enough. But to be told she couldn't wait in the discharge bay as "it was closed" seemed to imply that they wanted rid of her and couldn't supervise her. Why is a patient being discharged if she requires supervision? If I'm wrong I'm happy to be corrected, but that's what it sounded like. I was then told she'd be put into a taxi, and asked if she had money. Could they not have asked her that?

All in all I am appalled at the attitude of staff who don't take into account that family members can't just drop everything to suit them. I'm aware of the pressure on services, having worked in the NHS for several decades, but courtesy goes a long way in reassurance.

NHS staff are paid out of the public purse, and should treat the public with a bit more compassion.

Hi

I am sorry to read that your Mum had a negative experience whilst a patient recently. In order to direct your feedback to the correct team could you confirm what speciality your Mum was under the care of? Ward 49 is a shared area but it may not be recorded correctly on Care Opinion.

If you would like a more detailed response please feel free to contact the Complaints Team complaints@ggc.scot.nhs.uk

Update posted by Cancer Wontgetme (a relative)

Thank you for your response. My mother was a surgery inpatient. Apart from the discharge procedure we were happy with the care she received, and as previously noted I am aware that there is pressure on beds and services. I would like staff to be more aware of the pressures faced by families in trying to work around the limitations of the NHS. The day she was discharged was the first I was aware that she didn't "qualify" for patient transport. I'd have thought a pensioner, with limited mobility, a week after surgery, would have been a prime candidate. I realise that this is perhaps out with your remit, but it would have helped to have it explained or to be signposted to the correct information.

Hi

Thank you taking the time to reply and for the additional information related to your Mum's care. This has not be directed to the correct team but I will share your comments and also ask the Care Opinion Team if they can re-direct it from their side. Care Opinion is possibly not up to date with any changes in departments.

Please accept my apologies for the experience your Mum had and be assured your feedback will be shared

I hope you Mum is recovering now she is home and I wish her will in her recovery

Kind regards

C Blake
