"My journey through bowel cancer"

About: Derriford Hospital / General surgery North Devon District Hospital / Chemotherapy and Day Treatment Unit North Devon District Hospital / Colorectal surgery & stoma care North Devon District Hospital / Radiology (X-ray) Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Medical Imaging

(as the patient),

It all started in January 2025 with a colonoscopy due to the results from a postal poo test. Sadly the colonoscopy showed that I had a restricting tumour, this came as a dreadful shock but all of the staff there on that day were very kind and reassuring which helped no end. After various appointments, tests and scans it was decided that I needed a course of chemotherapy to shrink the tumour before surgery.

After a couple of chemo sessions I suffered a blocked bowel and was admitted for an emergency operation which resulted in me having a stoma.  At this point it looked as though the tumour may not have responded to the chemo, so a PET scan (at the RD&E) was done.   This showed that the tumour had in fact shrunk a bit, so the last chemo sessions resumed.  Once these were completed I had another CT scan which showed that the tumour had shrunk enough to operate.  Due to possible complications the surgery team at NDDH referred me to Derriford Hospital for the operation, this was successfully carried out in July 2025.

As I live nearer to NDDH at Barnstaple than Derriford at Plymouth, I asked for all follow up appointments to be held at NDDH.  At my last oncology appointment I was given the wonderful news that the tumour had been completely removed with no further spread.  I was told that I would be monitored for some years to come in case of the return of a tumour.  Throughout my whole treatment the staff in all of the departments from reception, colorectal clinics, Chemotherapy, CT, ECG PET scans and Xray, A&E, ICU, HDU Lundy and KGV wards (NDDH) and Stonehouse ward (Derriford) and the surgery teams in both hospitals was outstanding.  I can not thank them enough.

If I do have any quibbles, then it would be the apparent lack of communication between departments at Derriford and also with myself.  Hopefully this will improve when Derriford start using the same IT system (Epic) as NDDH. I have found the  My Care element of it very useful, for keeping informed of appointments and test results etc.

Thank you for taking the time to send us your feedback on your bowel cancer journey. So pleased to hear that you have had such a good result and I'm sure all the teams will be delighted to hear your nice comments. Yes you are correct, the electronic system with Derriford will definitely speed up communication for the patients as well as the various teams involved in patient care.

Wishing you all the best for continued good health.

With best wishes

I am a Diagnostic Radiographer with many years experience of working, and imaging patients, in all areas of the Radiology department. I am also responsible for the governance in Radiology and so make sure that we are compliant with the many ionising radiation regulations that dictate what we can and can't do in radiology, keep the patients and staff safe and ensure we are practicing safely. I also deal with our policies and procedures and oversee compliments, complaints and quality.

Dear eridanusfq74,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience, it sounds like you've had quite a journey over the last 9 months but thank goodness you took the opportunity of the postal screening test.

I'm so pleased to read that your tumour has been completely removed and with no further spread which must be such a relief for you and your family.

I will pass your kind feedback onto the imaging teams at NDDH who will be very pleased to receive them and read your story.

Kind regards

Gill

Good Morning eridanusfq74,

Your journey during your Bowel Cancer is truly remarkable and so positive at a very difficult time.

I am sorry that you found it difficult with the communication with Derriford Hospital and you are quite right next year with EPIC, we will all see each others communication and this will support better communication between the two hospitals.

It is wonderful to hear that the teams working together has supported you at a very difficult time.

I wish you the very best for the future and thank you for taking the time to let us know how you have found the service.

Lisa
