I had a visit from Beth the Frailty Practitioner. This visit came out out of the blue and was very timely and welcome. My wife and I were only children, met at school / university, from a poor background and spent 36 years in the Army. Mum died in 1996 and we looked after my father until he died disabled in 2016. Cared for mother in law until she died 2006 and my wife became disabled with Alzheimer's several years until her death in 2011. During all this time, I was a retired GP and carer, when my wife died, my four sons kept in contact from afar, but I looked after myself. Two years ago I asked for a social services reviews I was losing my capabilities. As an ex Paratrooper, I managed but received no supervision or review as I got frail. I am Diabetic, with quadruple bypass and atrial fibrillation, incontinent, rheumatic had several falls in the past two years and acute episode of pulmonary embolism. As a result of of all this, I was fearful for the future and largely out of contact with medical services. The intervention of Nurse Beth was of great benefit and very useful as a safety net in the future. But I am fearful for the future, when I was a lad, GP's used to keep an eye on the elderly with District nurses.
