"Heartfelt Thanks"

About: Torbay Hospital / Older people's healthcare

(as a relative),

I am writing to extend my deepest thanks to the staff on Cheetham Hill Ward at Torbay Hospital, who cared so compassionately for my Grandma, in her final days.

We were called towards the end of August and told that Grandma’s health had deteriorated and that her passing was likely imminent. In true fighting spirit, she carried on for another six nights before sadly passing away.

During that time, my sister and I were shown such kindness and understanding by the Cheetham Hill team. We were allowed to remain by Grandma’s side throughout, and the staff even arranged mattresses so that we could sleep beside her. That generosity meant the world to us. Our grandma played such a central role in our lives, raising us alongside our dad and being a constant source of love and strength. It would have meant so much to her knowing that we were both right by her side during her final days and hours, something only made possible by the incredible support of the ward team.

The kindness, empathy, and dignity shown by every member of Cheetham Hill made an unbearably difficult time just a little more bearable. We will always remember the care they gave to Grandma, and to us as her family. I am not the best with names, but I do want to mention Naomi, Leo, Vikki, Kat, Sophie, and Sunna (forgive me if I have not spelt them correctly). Each of them went above and beyond for us and for Grandma, they were a source of comfort, reassurance, and strength when we needed it most, and we will be eternally grateful to them.

Please could you ensure that our gratitude is passed on to the Cheetham Hill team, so they know just how much their care and thoughtfulness has meant to us.

We would also like to recognise the incredible support of the Chaplaincy Team, who visited almost every day to pray with Grandma and with us. Their presence brought great comfort, peace, and reassurance. The compassion and warmth they showed will always be remembered, and we are so grateful for the solace they provided in those final days.

Dear Louise556,

Please accept my condolences on the loss of your Grandma.

It is so very thoughtful of you to post this message at what must be such a difficult time for you and your family.

That you felt so well supported by the staff of Cheetham Hill, and the Chaplaincy team, who were also providing wonderful care to your Grandma, is truly gratifying. I will make sure that they are aware of your message and I'm sure they will be honoured to know that you have taken this time to think of them.

Please take care of yourself and your family.
