"Care after having heart attack"

About: Golden Jubilee National Hospital / Cardiac Surgery New Victoria Hospital / Cardiac rehabilitation NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service) Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Accident & Emergency Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Cardiology (Heart Conditions) Wards 6c & 6d Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Coronary Care Unit (CCU) Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as the patient),

I suffered a heart attack at home, called 111 as wasn't sure what service you request. I was in pain and the staff on 111 realised I was in midst of heart attack and quickly assessed me for ambulance.

During the wait, a Dr from the service called me back and raised the call to red. Within a short time ambulance came, taken to QE11 A&E.

I was admitted to coronary care and then a ward. I remained there for 2 weeks waiting to be transferred to Jubilee to get Angiogram. This wait was frustrating and was mentally exhausting. I was basically bed blocking. Surely a big coronary unit in QE11 should have this equipment to allow patients to be treated quicker rather than bed blocking.

I cannot praise the staff highly enough, knowing they were short staffed etc.

Once transferred to Jubilee I waited a couple of days for angiogram again delayed due to urgent cases being transferred from various hospitals..

I finally had a Quadruple bypass which was a major shock to both myself and family. Was wonderfully treated by all staff that nursed me from Wards, ICU, HDU then finally back to ward to recover. I spent a total of 4 weeks in hospital before released home.

After initial short time to recover I attended the Rehab unit in New Victoria hospital. I have benefitted from the exercises shown me,and have enjoyed all the sessions. The staff have been thoughtful, caring and ensured that I benefitted from their guidance and instruction. It was also good to get to know other patients  in the session that had went through similar issues It was always a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. I would recommend anyone to take the chance of attending rehab it definitely aids your recovery
