"My niece's treatment"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Accident & Emergency

(as a relative),

My niece was splashed in the eye with urine while at work. The sample had a blood trace. A+E sent her home without any assessment of her eye nor requested viral bloods. Said been in a similar situation and it was awful waiting on results for 6 months and I wouldn't want to do that to you. I'm sure she'd rather know if she'd contracted anything rather than go into the community unawares. Nice to see them looking after no 1 (themselves). Also, no name badge. When her mum called to ask reason for not wearing wearing one, said - we don't have to wear badges here, like outpatient department workers do. Really?! That's not health board guidance.

Dear Seeall,

Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. I’m very sorry to hear about your niece’s experience — it’s completely understandable that this situation has caused distress for both her and your family.

Please be assured that we are taking this feedback seriously. I would be grateful if you could provide your niece’s name, date of birth and date of attendance and I will look into this further as care opinion doesn't share personal details.

Thank you again for raising this. We are committed to learning from such experiences and improving the care we provide.

With kind regards,

Karen

Hi Karen,

Thanks for your response. My niece doesn't want me to give anyone her details - she doesn't even know I wrote here. Staff shouldn't with one breath say - 'that's nothing to worry about', but then say that they've been through a similar experience but made sure they got all checks done themselves. The other point was the lack of name badges.

Many thanks

Dear Seeall,

I absolutely appreciate your nieces position, thank you for raising your concerns on her behalf.

We’ve taken on board the points you've made. I have ensured staff have been reminded of the importance of wearing name badges at all times, in line with our policy. I've also reiterated the need for clear, consistent communication—especially around sensitive matters—to ensure that no one feels confused or dismissed.

Thank you for your feedback, we have used it as a learning opportunity to reinforce best practice across the team.

with kind regards,

Karen
