"Each meeting was so beneficial to me"

About: Staffordshire Treatment and Recovery Service - STARS / North Team

(as a service user),

I self referred to stars Newcastle-under-Lyme in April of this year following a health issue, which amongst other things turned out to be a stomach ulcer. It became apparent that my years of using alcohol , and increased use of alcohol, had affected a lot of things, not just my self neglect.

When I first came to see Sam at the Ryecroft , I had already managed to do 4 weeks of complete abstinence alone so I didn't know what to expect really. Upon meeting Sam I instantly felt at ease and was so grateful for his support and understanding and encouragement. Each meeting was so beneficial to me as it encouraged me to know that I could speak freely and Sam recognised the fact that I found the temptation was everywhere whilst also recognising and advising the mindset to change thought processes surrounding them. Sam kept in touch also via text and calls , he also signposted me to an employment advisor (Matt) who I used to meet with and found his help brilliant too. I had a nurse appointment within my time at stars too, whereby I had a liver scan which had a great result which in turn showed me what physical changes I had made by living an alcohol free life.

My time with Sam has now ended and I remain completely abstinent with a different mindset, I thank Sam and all at STARS for their great work ! X

Hi Lizzy S,

My name is Hannah and I am the Hub Manager for the STaRS Inclusion Newcastle-under-Lyme service.

Firstly, I would like to say how inspiring and heartwarming your story has been to read today. You really should be so proud of how well you have done, how open you have been when working with Sam and Matt and how engaging you have been in your appointments as well as attending regularly. It's amazing to read that you have maintained your abstinence, have new ways of coping and have a brand new mindset - this could not have been possible without your dedication and commitment to your recovery. It's great that this has also translated to improvements in your physical health.

I have also really enjoyed reading your feedback about Sam personally and how helpful you found his support. It is clear that you were both able to build a great working relationship together. I will make sure that Sam, Matt and the nurse that you saw receives this feedback directly, as well as the STaRS inclusion team as a whole.

I, Sam and everyone here at STaRS inclusion wishes you all the best in your future journey.

Thank you again,

Hannah
