About: Community Learning Disability / Learning Disability Team West Dunbartonshire Health & Social Care Partnership / Community Learning Disability Team

(as a parent/guardian),

Our daughter has profound learning disabilities and complex health needs.

Susie is a clinical nurse specialist in learning disability and respiratory. Susie is an excellent respiratory nurse but she also helps us with so much more. She sees our daughter as a whole person, recognising the complexity of her individual needs and the potential effects that one treatment may have on another, or how one health issue can affect another. This is crucial to the outcome for my daughter. Susie is always happy to come to our house to offer advice or training to us and our daughter’s carers.

Our daughter’s physiotherapist from the community leaning disability team, Rakesh, also comes to our home to deliver training when we feel we need it, particularly when new members of staff join our team of carers.

Recently Susie and Rakesh both came to our home and jointly delivered training to our team of carers. This training session was invaluable to us. For example, it included why, when and how  we need to use nebulisers, suctioning, or oxygen. It also included why, when and how to perform chest physio, autogenic drainage and postural care both as a preventative measure and as a treatment. It was particularly beneficial for this training to take place in my daughter’s own environment using her own equipment.

Rakesh is employed by West Dunbartonshire HSCP and Susie is employed by East Renfrewshire HSCP.

We are so grateful to both of these highly skilled health professionals for working together to deliver training which was completely focused on what was best for my daughter.

Hello Chaey95

My name is Ashley Welsh and I am the Professional Nurse Lead for Learning Disability services in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. Thank you so much for the taking the time to provide positive feedback about Susie and her colleague, Rakesh.

I am very pleased to hear about the difference that Susie has made for your daughter by using her clinical skills and compassionate care delivery. This is a fantastic example of holistic, person centred care and the difference that learning disability nurse skills can make to a person's life. It is also lovely to hear about the positive impact that joint working had for your daughter. Learning disability health professionals try hard to work collaboratively with people from other professions and specialities to meet the needs of the people they are supporting. It is great to hear how valued this input has been for you and your daughter.

I will ensure your feedback is shared with Susie, Rakesh and the rest of the learning disability service. Stories like yours remind us why we do what we do and the difference that our service can make for the people we work with.

Kind Regards,
Ashley Welsh
Professional Nurse Lead
