"Gastroenterology Appointments"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Gastroenterology

(as the patient),

I’m writing to share some feedback regarding my recent appointment.

Unfortunately, upon arrival, I experienced a long wait before being called in. When I was eventually seen, it was by a junior gastroenterology doctor, not the consultant I had been expecting. I don’t recall the junior doctor’s name, but I had anticipated seeing the named consultant, and the appointment may have gone differently if that had been the case.

I was discharged with a diagnosis relating to gut issues, but not IBS, as all the tests came back clear. However, I felt the consultation was quite rushed. The doctor asked the same questions multiple times, and I felt somewhat patronised during the conversation. Additionally, no follow-up appointments or further steps were offered, which left me uncertain about the next stage in my care.

I understand that the test results were relatively normal, but I had hoped for a more thorough consultation and clearer guidance on what to do next.

Dear ShaunB

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your recent experience with us. I am very sorry to hear that your appointment did not go as planned, and I appreciate you taking the time to let us know.

I understand how frustrating it must have been to wait longer than expected. Sometimes, clinics run over for various reasons, and I am sorry this affected you. Consultants are often supported by Junior Doctors during their clinics, who receive guidance from the Consultant. I apologise that this was not communicated to you, and you were seen by someone other than the Consultant you were expecting.

I am also sorry to hear that the consultation felt rushed and left you uncertain about the next steps. Since Care Opinion is anonymous, can you please contact our Complaints Team at ggc.complaints@nhs.scot with your personal details for a more detailed response. It would be helpful if you could include your Care Opinion link: https://www.careopinion.org.uk/1389615.

Thank you

Please note that I have already contacted the Consultant's Secretary via email, and they have confirmed that my message has been forwarded to both the Consultant and the doctor I saw on the day of my appointment so I don't know if their dealing with it on their side.

I understand that junior doctors help but I believe it should have we as patients should be allowed to say no

I would like to thank the NHS team for their support and care.

After my initial feedback, I was pleased to see that my case was taken seriously and assigned to a consultant that I have meant to have seen. Since then, we have made noticeable progress, and I truly appreciate the ongoing attention to my health.

I'm especially glad that the consultant is bringing me back into the clinic for follow-up — it gives me confidence that my care is being managed properly and proactively.

Thank you again for your continued support.
