My 20 year old daughter was taken to the hospital ED at the royal hospital recently. The staff were completely run off their feet, they didn’t stop the whole 15 hours that we spent at the ED department.
My daughter was unwell and got worse in the early hours of the following morning mainly with gyne issues including very heavy uncontrollable bleeding and was in a lot of pain and discomfort. We were attended to at the female toilets when the medical problems got extremely worse, by two female nurses and one male nurse called John. Initially we were take back by a male nurse attending due to the nature of what was going on with my daughter, though I have to say he really helped my daughter who was very embarrassed. He made sure she received the right treatment, ensured her dignity was maintained at all times. John went the extra mile he made sure my daughter who was experiencing bad gyne problems was given the best of care. My daughter was extremely embarrassed, though John made sure she was put at ease he came to the female toilets with a chair for her and a blanket to wrap around the lower half of her body he took her to a side part of the hospital to ensure she didn’t have to go past the public in the main waiting area, he placed us in a side room for the doctor to come and speak to her. John in that short space of time had got to know a bit about my daughter he discussed different care options with her and personal things like studying work travel etc. prior to John caring for the needs of my daughter she was very emotional embarrassed and upset. John had a great personality and a lovely way with him and that soon made my daughter comfortable and calm something even I as her mother wasn’t able to do at that time.
John then came back and moved us to a room were again at major care were she was given the best of care directed by him. All this was done whilst multitasking and managing alot of other very challenging patients, though johns professionalism did not slip for a minute. He asked the student nurse if she could get my daughter and myself some tea and toast which the lovely student nurse did do and we were very very grateful for that.
Two other nurses attended to my daughter and got her up on a drip, again John kept popping his head in every so often to ask was my daughter ok did we needs anything checking the drip was still flowing as needed and also asking the student nurse to carry out obs every 30 mins due to low blood pressure, which was done.
When it was time for home and my daughter was given the all clear we made sure we thanked John personally as we feel if it wasn’t for him our waiting time would have been much greater. My daughter herself said that if it wasn’t for John she wouldn’t have felt as calm as she did, she also said that she was very surprised the treatment she received of John considering her was male and she was a young girl.
We feel this thought her a big life lesson, never judge. I hope John sees this or hears about our gratitude and knows how much his care helped us that night. We listened to him with other patients also and we could hear the care and empathy in his voice. I just feel that given how busy he was, it could be easy to let our guard down to not be as personal to give less personal care etc but no, John ensured that didn’t happen.
Thank you John for making my daughter better, for giving her excellent gyne advice and some advice about enjoying her last year of uni and getting the head down for her dissertation these wee things may not seem much to some but as a mummy and to my daughter they meant a lot. We feel John is an amazing nurse, we think he sounds and looks like great fun and is 100% in the right profession! Keep being you John and never change!
