"GP appointment scripted jargon"

About: Borders General Practices

(as a service user),

This is just general feedback for the way GP appointments are structured:

Myself and several others I have talked to end up getting very flustered and experience feelings ranging from annoyance to unworthy of care when asked by GP’s ‘what do you want to get from this appointment’. For those who struggle with stress or anxiety which, these days, is most of us, after we have been brave and opened up about our ailments, this sentence is the antithesis of helpful. The general feeling is to respond to this ‘well you’re the doctor, you tell me!’ But you end up coming out of the appointment feeling like it was a complete waste of time because they put you on the spot. If you’re not a health professional or don’t have knowledge about human biology, it is really hard for the lay person to tell their GP what they ‘want to get out of the appointment’. It would be nice if this clearly scripted sentence was scrapped.

Dear turkeywd95

I am sorry to hear that you have been annoyed and flustered during GP appointments. I am sure your GP would be saddened to hear that you felt appointments with them were a waste of time and encourage you to contact the Practice Manager for your practice with further details of your experience to allow them to address this.

Regards

Karen
