"Receiving Wound Care Following Top Surgery"

About: General practices in Lanarkshire

(as the patient),

Recently I visited Kilsyth Medical Partnership for a wound check and redress following my top surgery (double mastectomy) as part of my transition as a transgender man. I was understandably nervous — it was the first time I would see my chest after surgery, and I was also anxious about having to explain that I am transgender. From the moment I arrived, I was treated with kindness and respect, which immediately helped put me at ease.

I was seen by Nurse Donna, whose medical knowledge, gentle approach, and compassion made all the difference. She carefully removed the hospital dressings, which had caused a reaction on my sensitive skin, and applied new ones that were far more comfortable. Throughout, she reassured me, explaining what she was doing and what I could expect in the recovery stages. Even though wounds, bruising, and stitches usually make me queasy, Donna’s calm confidence and kindness helped me feel safe and cared for.

As a trans man, this surgery holds deep meaning for me, and being treated with such dignity and understanding during such a vulnerable moment is something I will not forget. I left the appointment not only feeling physically better, but also reassured and uplifted, knowing I was in capable, supportive hands.

A massive thank you to Donna and the team at Kilsyth Medical Partnership for providing excellent health care!

Dear togetherness24,

Thank you for sharing your experience of your GP practice.

I am delighted to hear about the kindness, compassion and dignified care you received for what I am sure was a nerve wracking appointment. This is exactly how I expect staff to treat every patient. I am so glad that Donna's person centred approach to your care helped you feel better when normally you would be a little queasy - which is completely understandable. I also recognise that this was the first time you have seen your body post surgery and her gentle approach will have helped greatly with the emotions that surround that. I am delighted you have had such an excellent experience.

Unfortunately GP Practices are independant contractors and as such are not set up to respond to stories on Care Opinion but please be assured that I have passed on your lovely feedback to Donna and the team who I am sure will get a real boost in hearing this.

I wish you all the best in the rest of your journey.

Best Wishes,

Jenni
