"Ongoing recovery from lung cancer"

About: Oncology / Physical Activity Classes

(as a service user),

I was diagnosed with lung cancer in October 2024. Treatment included immunotherapy, chemotherapy and then surgery in April to remove the upper lobe of my left lung. Unfortunately I took a severe reaction to the immunotherapy which affected my thyroid and liver. All of this left me feeling very weak and lacking in energy.

I was referred to Joe, who is the physical coach at the Friends of the Cancer Centre.

Prior to my first class I had a thorough 1 to 1 session with Joe to see what level I was at and to discuss my individual needs. The following 12 classes were paced perfectly for my level of fitness. As the sessions progressed I began to feel stronger and gained more energy.

The weekly time slot helped motivate me to get better and I also had access to online workouts which I could do in my own time. Having just finished the 12 sessions I had another thorough 1 to 1 session with Joe to plan ahead. I am now signing up to continue physical activity classes in a local leisure centre as well as yoga classes in the MacMillan centre.

The activity classes have definitely helped with my motivation and have played a big part in my recovery. Would recommend to others the importance of physical activity in long term recovery from cancer.

Hi listenqk47

Thank you so much for taking the time to voice your thoughts on the service provided by our physical activity coach. It is great to hear that you enjoyed the 12 exercise sessions with Joe and that they were tailored to your individual needs. I’m glad that you felt stronger and had more energy as well. I’m so pleased that the classes gave you the motivation to get better and that you are continuing on with exercise now that your time with Joe has finished. Please continue to keep active and I will make sure to let Joe know about your great feedback.

Kind Regards
