"Excellent deaf aware care"

About: Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Ophthalmology

(as a service user),

I recently took my one year old son to the Royal Children’s Hospital’s (in Glasgow) ophthalmology clinic. We saw a staff member (nurse or therapist) who was fantastic, her name is Ruth. She has learned British Sign Language to level 2 and signed the whole appointment to my son. She was so inclusive, deaf aware, engaging and supportive. She couldn’t have been better! Amazing health care service! Thank you!

Dear melonyq93

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience at the Royal Hospital for Children’s Ophthalmology Clinic.

We’re absolutely delighted to hear about the care and attention shown by Ruth during your son’s appointment. Her commitment to inclusivity and communication — including learning British Sign Language to Level 2 — is truly commendable and a perfect example of person-centred care in action.

It’s fantastic to know that her deaf awareness and use of BSL helped make the experience so positive and supportive for both you and your son. We’ll make sure your kind words are passed on to Ruth and the wider team — they’ll be absolutely thrilled.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your story. We wish you and your son all the very best.

Kind regards

Kevin
