I was referred to the Adult Psychology Service after a very difficult experience with another NHS department. During that time, I felt repeatedly dismissed and gaslighted, and eventually had to go abroad to obtain the correct diagnosis, which turned out to be far more severe than what the NHS had initially suggested.
I was nervous at first about attending and opening up, as the previous experience had severely impacted my mental health. However, after just two sessions, I felt truly seen and listened to. I gained valuable insight into myself and my behaviours, which I don’t believe would have been possible without the psychologist’s inclusive approach. They involved me in every aspect of the process and always asked what would work best for me.
The psychologist created a safe space where I felt comfortable fully opening up about my thoughts and feelings, and I never felt unable to share how I truly felt.
I actually began to really enjoy each session and dedicated time to doing the work outside of them as well.
This gave me a completely different perspective of the NHS and helped restore some of my trust in health professionals. It has been truly life-changing, and I am deeply grateful for what I learned about myself and my behaviours — lessons that I continue to apply in my daily life.
