"Created a safe space where I felt comfortable"

About: Forth Valley Community Services / Psychological therapies

(as a service user),

I was referred to the Adult Psychology Service after a very difficult experience with another NHS department. During that time, I felt repeatedly dismissed and gaslighted, and eventually had to go abroad to obtain the correct diagnosis, which turned out to be far more severe than what the NHS had initially suggested.

I was nervous at first about attending and opening up, as the previous experience had severely impacted my mental health. However, after just two sessions, I felt truly seen and listened to. I gained valuable insight into myself and my behaviours, which I don’t believe would have been possible without the psychologist’s inclusive approach. They involved me in every aspect of the process and always asked what would work best for me.

The psychologist created a safe space where I felt comfortable fully opening up about my thoughts and feelings, and I never felt unable to share how I truly felt.

I actually began to really enjoy each session and dedicated time to doing the work outside of them as well.

This gave me a completely different perspective of the NHS and helped restore some of my trust in health professionals. It has been truly life-changing, and I am deeply grateful for what I learned about myself and my behaviours — lessons that I continue to apply in my daily life.

Dear Apl7

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience in such detail. It is clear that you went through a very challenging and distressing time prior to your referral, and it is understandable that this affected your trust in healthcare services.

It is therefore particularly encouraging to hear that your sessions with the Adult Psychology Service have been such a positive experience. The fact that you felt truly listened to, involved in the process, and supported in a safe environment is of great importance to us. Your willingness to engage both within and outside of sessions reflects a real commitment to your own wellbeing.

It is also heartening to hear that this experience has helped to restore your confidence in the NHS and provided you with valuable insights and strategies that you continue to apply in your daily life. Your feedback highlights the significant impact that inclusive, person-centred care can have, and it is very much appreciated. I will make sure your feedback is shared with the team.

Thank you again

Linda McAuslan
