"Nursing Care given to my beautiful Mum at End of Life"

About: Inverclyde Royal Hospital / Elderly Medicine (ward K south, 2 & 3 Larkfield Unit) Inverclyde Royal Hospital / Medical Receiving Ward (J North) Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as a relative),

My mum had several falls at home and after using the home alarm system we called an ambulance. Firstly the paramedics who attended mum were great and calmed her down as she's never been a fan of medical interventions that potentially put her into hospital 🏥

She was admitted initially to IRH receiving ward who were quick to give mum tests to ascertain what's happened to her. Tests showed mum not well with urine infection, pleurisy and fluid around the heart she was them taken down to Ward 2 where they swiftly got mum on fluids, IV antibiotics and they discovered her potassium was lowso that too, and fitted with Oxygen.

What can I say what a team they all showed mum love, care and compassion from the very start, I can't remember all their names but the ones I do remember that could always settle mum when she got distressed and any treatment she needed they were right on it.

Alan ( head nurse) Lee and the young female nurse who'd sit with mum in her room doing her notes absolutely amazing humans. It rapidly became apparent that despite the treatments mum wasn't making much improvement and we were taken into a room with the consultant and Lee for that dreaded discussion, mum was too frail and wasn't going to make it. Our world as we knew it was turned upside down as our Mum was our Queen.

She was then moved to Ward 3 where the same excellent care compassion and love was shown to our Mum again names escape me but I do remember a nurse called Joanne who Mum really took to.

We can't thank these guys enough the love, care, compassion and dignity they showed our Mum in this her end of life journey was phenomenal, they were always attentive to us which was a very difficult time for us as we prepared to lose our wonderful Mum.

From the bottom of my heart thank you.

Dear Fairydust,

Please accept my heartfelt condolences on the loss of your beloved mum. I see that your feedback relates to a number of services. I'm responding on behalf of the Scottish Ambulance Service.

It’s comforting to know that the paramedics were able to reassure your mum and support her so kindly during such a difficult time. Your words about the care she received across many NHS services are deeply moving.

Thank you for taking the time to share this. If you’re happy to do so, we’d love to pass your message on to the ambulance crew. Please email sas.feedback@nhs.scot with your mum’s name, the date, time and address of the call out, along with your Care Opinion username, so we can match your feedback with the team.

With warmest wishes,

Marie

Dear Fairydust

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your heartfelt story about your mum’s care. Please accept our deepest condolences for your loss. We are truly sorry that your beloved Mum—your Queen—has passed away.

It means a great deal to us to know that, during such a difficult and emotional time, the care and compassion shown by our staff at Inverclyde Royal Hospital —from the paramedics to the teams in Receiving Ward, Ward 2, and Ward 3—brought some comfort to you and your family.

We’re incredibly proud of staff like Alan, Lee, Joanne, and the many others you mentioned (and those whose names may have been forgotten in the moment) who made such a difference through their dedication, skill, and above all, humanity. To hear that they showed your Mum not only excellent clinical care but also genuine love, compassion, and dignity, means everything to us.

Your message has been shared with the teams involved, and it will no doubt bring them great pride and comfort to know how much their care meant to you and your family.

On behalf of everyone at the NHS, thank you again for your kind words. We send you and your family our sincere condolences and wish you strength in the days ahead.

Kind regards

Kevin

Thank you ever so much Alison, nursing staff don't always get the recognition they deserve but they were all amazing and just for the record I think nurses should be band 6/7 for the responsibility they have
