"Very impressed by the nursing staff"

About: Trauma & Orthopaedics / Ward 23

(as a relative),

Very impressed by the nursing staff of ward 23, Altnagelvin Hospital. My mother-in-law, who has dementia, fell and broke her hip. The nurses were/are brilliant, they gave us a questionnaire regarding her likes and dislikes and have taken everything onboard. They are caring and show empathy for her condition.

Thank you to each one.

Dear Bertha36

My name is Nicola Hayes and I am the Dementia Service Improvement Lead for Hospitals.

Thank you for your feedback story with regards to ‘very impressed by the nursing staff’ and thank you for taking the time to post this story, at a time when your mother in law was recently unwell and in hospital. I hope your mother in law has recovered well from her fracture and post recovery period.

Coming into hospital can be such a stressful experience, not only for our patients but also for their families/carers. Approach and communication are vital in the caring profession, not only to ensure that all your mother in law's needs are met, but also that your needs as a family are met.

Person centred care is paramount within dementia care and this has been evidenced throughout your experience of the nursing staff. I am glad to hear that your mother in law's likes and dislikes were established and that this was put into practice to enhance that person centred approach. This was also evidenced by the empathy you witnessed of your mother in law's condition.

May I thank you again for taking the time to share your experiences with us on Care Opinion.

Your feedback is very welcome to ensure safe, effective, compassionate and well led care is delivered.

Best Wishes

Nicola
