"My friend's experience"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Accident & Emergency Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / General Surgery Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Gynaecology Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as a friend),

Hi so this is my friend's story she was admitted to the Royal Infirmary after having severe abdominal pain on the flight home from holiday, which led to the pilot call a medical emergency and we were met on the ground by firefighters that assessed her and called for an ambulance. At first she was refused due to being alert and oriented and was to wait for a clinician to call us, we eventually got a call and I had to answer for her as she was struggling to talk due to the severity of the pain, the gas and air was not even touching her pain.

We eventually got an ambulance crew, who were so helpful and caring toward her. We then got to A&E, and they triaged her quickly and got her through to majors. She then waited 1 hour for pain relief after repeatedly asking for some she was severely sore and couldn’t get comfortable at all.

She was accepted by gynae and got and uss which showed she had no cyst so they called the surgeon who assessed her as said she can go home, however she couldn’t walk by herself, she hadn’t eaten since Sunday night and this was Tuesday, they said they weren’t going to do any other investigation cause they have got access to her history and that she would be better just going and going to her own hospital.

At this point her pain was still 10/10 and nothing they gave was helping her pain and they still were insisting she be discharged, she had no choice but to get someone to pick her up and take her to another hospital.

I am very disgusted and disappointed with the care my friend received, I feel it was neglectful and should never happen to anyone, she was in severe pain and distressed and she was treated like her pain wasn’t there.

Thank you for taking the time to feedback on behalf of your friend - I can only apologise on behalf of the Emergency Department that your friend was not offered timely analgesia for her pain, I have reminded staff about the importance of assessing pain and providing timely pain relief. I hope your friend has recovered and the route of her pain has been investigated and resolved.

Kind regards

Ray

Dear sambatg74

Thank you for sharing your friend’s experience. I see that your feedback relates to a number of services and you have already received a response from NHS Lothian about your friend's care in A&E. I’m responding on behalf of the Scottish Ambulance Service.

I’m very glad to hear that the ambulance crew provided helpful and compassionate care during what must have been a very distressing time.

If your friend would like to share further details about the ambulance response, they’re welcome to contact us at sas.feedback@nhs.scot with their Care Opinion username and the date, time and location of the call out.

Warm regards
Marie Kennedy
