"Wheelchair supply"

About: WestMARC (Lanarkshire) / Adult Wheelchair Clinic

(as a carer),

My husband had an amputation and is much bigger than me. We asked for a wheelchair that I can lift in and out of a car and push over a ramp he can not propel over unassisted. We were refused. I feel like I am letting him down as he can not get out in the car for shopping, holidays etc. I worry that in the event of a fire or other emergency his life could be lost. Feeling very depressed.

I'm sorry to hear you have been refused a wheelchair. If you could please contact me directly I can see if we can assist you further.

Please contact WestMARC on 0300790 0129 and ask to speak to me directly.

Update posted by tireesmum (a carer)

The service replied I could contact them directly. I have tried and was told she would call back. No such luck. I tried calling them again this week and was informed someone else was the person dealing with my husband's wheelchair.

We have never spoken to them. I was told they would call back and again no call has been received.

How do I get a wheelchair my husband, an amputee, can use that I can push over the ramp to get out of the house and lift into the car?

I am terrified that in an emergency I will not be able to get my husband out of the house. We are both scared and becoming increasingly depressed. No one helps or listens.

Dear tireesmum,

I am sorry you have not received a follow up response from the service. Please would it be possible for you to make contact with the service by telephone or email? Also in the absence of Susan please ask for Janice, Administration Manager.

She will be able to direct your concerns to our duty clinician who will be able to help.

Our email address is ggc.westmarc@nhs.scot.

Kind regards,

Gill Cant

Update posted by tireesmum (a carer)

Yet again I have been unable to speak to the above people. I am desperate, really upset and in tears again. We have been told my husband is on a waiting list for a light weight chair, but no idea how long that is. Patient transport came to collect him for an appointment today and and for the second time he has been told he cannot take his wheelchair. How is an amputee supposed to get round the hospital with out his chair? This is the second time this has happened. If I could get the light weight wheelchair I could take him myself but as it stand I cannot push his chair out the door or lift it in and out of the car. I cannot believe that we are having such a fight to help him keep his dignity and independence.
