While mum was in hospital, she was very disoriented confused kept wandering at night packing her belongs wanting to go home didn’t know where she was thought it was a hotel /prison and pulled many of the cannulas out of the arm hand with huge bruises and blood on her clothes this very upsetting for both my sister and I to see other patients notice and their relatives spoke about how mum was when we weren’t there
On the Saturday we were informed mum would be medically fit for discharge on the Monday but had to have a care plan in place as would need additional care when home. We asked the staff not to tell mum until the Monday morning as she would stress and get confused etc. when we visited mum on the Sunday morning, she had packed her belongings excepting to go home she had a very upsetting day which was totally unnecessary.
We expressed our concern that we felt mum wasn’t ready to be discharged as still very confused agitated but was told mum was medically fit and the bed was already allocated for someone else. They expected us to collect mum but we felt it was too much for mum to be taken home by us and we were concerned it would be to dangerous and asked for patient transport to be organised
Mum arrived home on the Monday totally confused, upset looking unwell. the reablement nurse was going see mum later that day to see what care she would need, during the afternoon mum deteriorated, had breathing problems the nurse came as we were experiencing mum having issues she did observations on as mum was leaning forward trying to breath bring up watery fluid mum actually though she was dying she was very scared
An ambulance was sent, they checked mum and could hear cracking on her lower lungs and diagnose possible aspirated pneumonia they could see mum was in a bad way after us talking and mum rallying around it was thought it was best for mum to stay at home as mum was already on strong antibiotic that would clear up the chest infection.
On the Tuesday night I hoped the mum was settled for the night after reassurance from mum she was ok I left, at 4 am the care line people phoned me to say mum was found out the front of her flat building by a young man who managed to contact the care company open the front door to the building and got mum back safely to her flat both my sister and I were totally shocked upset that this happened we also found out mum had followed a carer into a flat and refused to leave sat in a chair and was quite aggressive
The repercussions of this was my sister and I had to safeguard mum 24/7 till mum was placed in the care home she is now in
After many phone calls to various agencies and realising mum should not have been discharged home with delirium eliriumlimany of the cares that visited mum could see the decline in mum mental cognitive confusion ect.
I was ringing different people for help and advice as we were at breaking point, Then Sheila called to find out what had happened, came out to see mum. Sheila was wonderful, mum was having a very bad day, Sheila asked questions but not at any time did mum fell uneasy or felt she was being questioned about her cognition or the issues we had.
Mum was very agitated constantly repeating herself unable to remember certain words couldn’t explain how she felt lost vast gaps in her life it was very upsetting to seen mum so low
Mum has had memory issues over the past year getting confused with date and time ringing us getting confused, calling in the night thinking it was morning forgetting names, very low mood. falling asleep in the afternoon completely missing a day. Having sleep issues in the afternoon to evening being more scared confused, we didn’t have a diagnosis
Mum’s symptoms have got much worse over the last two months her cognitive decline from thinking she couldn’t speak after asking me to touch her cheek and then talking normally ring up thinking she solved a murder think there were riots outside her flat wondering around her flat at night, taking her bottom clothes off talking to someone in her sleep with her arms pointing very animated and forgot how to use her phone, tv remote and chair controller.
From that meeting we felt that at last help was being organised the time and effort that was involved must have been immense, we had phone calls trying to get mum the respite that she should have got on her hospital discharge
My sister and I are thankful for all the support and afford that has gone into mum respite
"Thankful for all the support"
