"I felt really well looked after"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Discharge Lounge North Devon District Hospital / General surgery North Devon District Hospital / Theatres

(as the patient),

I was very nervous about coming into hospital because I was on my own and last time I was in hospital it was not a pleasant experience at all. The doctors came to see me before my surgery to go over my treatment and any concerns I may have. The anaesthetist was very kind and agreed to put the cannula in my wrist instead of my hand as that was very uncomfortable for me last time. He understood and didn’t make me feel like I was making a fuss.

I was crying a bit when I went into theatres because I was scared and expecting to feel unwell when I woke up. The staff in the anaesthetic room were very reassuring. Mr Bain and Mr Massri did the surgery and all seems ok so far. Mr Bain came to see me later on and said all had gone well. I was pleasantly surprised when I woke up with no pain and I felt very comfortable with no ill effects from the anaesthetic.

I stayed on Lundy ward afterwards, it was fantastic. There was a lovely, peaceful atmosphere on the ward and I was able to sleep well. I was very lucky to have a side room to myself so I was very comfortable and relaxed. The staff kept reminding me that if I needed anything I could just press the bell any time. This was very reassuring and made me feel that I wouldn’t be a nuisance if I needed help and it wouldn’t be any trouble for them. They made sure I had enough pain relief at all times.

The food wasn’t too bad and I had plenty to eat. They made sure I had enough water and there was even tea and biscuits. I was kept well informed about my care so I knew what to expect. For example, they told me what times they would be coming in to do my observations overnight. I felt really well looked after, I lacked for nothing and my stay was so much better than I had been expecting. I almost didn’t want to go home.

The staff in the discharge lounge were very kind as well, they gave me the option to lie on a bed or sit in a chair and there was more tea and biscuits on offer. Throughout my stay I felt like everyone did their utmost to make me feel comfortable.

We really appreciate that you have taken time to share your lovely feedback with us at NDDH and especially with us on Lundy ward.

We are pleased that your stay with us was comfortable, felt well cared for and that the overall experience was better than you expected. Your feedback is valuable to any future patients that may be feeling anxious about the unknown so I thank you again.

I hope that you continue to recover and get stronger and are able to get back to what you enjoy doing.

Best wishes

Tara
