"I was very impressed with the unit"

About: Chelsea & Westminster Hospital / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

Wonderful Team at Chelsea & Westminster Day Surgery Unit.

I had a hysteroscopy under general anaesthetic this morning at Chelsea & Westminster's Day Surgery Unit and couldn't have wished for a better experience.

I was originally booked in 4 days previously but theater over-ran so after 5 hours I was sent home without treatment.  The staff rebooked me there and then, so there was no worry about waiting for another appointment.

I was a little bit worried that as I'd be an 'extra' on the planned list I might get sent home unseen again, but both the anaesthetist and the gynaecologist mentioned that they'd seen I'd been cancelled last time so they'd put me in first today to make sure it didn't happen again.

Last time there was quite a bit of pressure to have a Mirena coil fitted but this time the (different) gynaecologist said she could see it had been previously discussed and it was absolutely my choice to have one or not.

The anaesthetist was wonderful, very caring and reassuring (also friendly and funny) and I woke up feeling great - not groggy or sick, no sore throat, not even any pain in my hand from the cannula!

Likewise, the gynaecologist did an excellent job and I woke up feeling hardly anything.

The recovery team were very proactive in managing any post op pain and by the time went home, only 90 minutes after waking up I felt absolutely great!

I was very impressed with how modern and lovely the unit was, and how all the staff I interacted with made a point of introducing themselves and explaining thoroughly what was going on.  They all came across as very professional but also caring and kind; surgery can be scary but the team made the whole experience a breeze.

Five hours after arriving at Chelsea & Westminster I was back home feeling like nothing had happened, a great result!
