I have had problems with constant phlegm in my throat for many years, which at its worst can prevent me from speaking at all. I waited approximately 18 months from referral to appointment, during which time I worked on the problem myself and managed to improve it a bit through singing lessons.
The staff I met at ENT and SLT were very helpful and explained everything very clearly. My vocal cords were examined (ENT) with a camera which showed gapping in my vocal cords. I was then referred to SLT and given generic exercises to address the issues.
After 2 appointments I was discharged, with my agreement. So far so good, however, the problem persists and the exercises don't add anything to what I was already doing. I appreciate that the NHS is under a lot of pressure and my difficulties are not life threatening. They do however affect my self confidence and, in earlier years, my ability to carry out my profession.
I am aware that there are more thorough tests that can be done but I appreciate that my case is not a priority and that time is limited. I am grateful for what was done but disappointed by the limitations put on the service.
