Went to see a doctor about a few things and one was menopause. I have not had a period for several months now. At the time of the appointment I was getting a lot of hot flushes etc. I asked the doc to increase my Clonidine, which I am already on for high blood pressure.
I suppose he was surprised to hear Clonidine mentioned for menopause as many patients will just go on HRT straight away. Well, I just wanted to try other options first. My opinion is that is the sensible thing to do.
The male doctor did not seem to have heard of it being used for menopause. He wanted me to go and see a female doctor instead, one with a specialism in menopause. That meant booking a second appointment.
Look, women are 51% of the population. There is nothing special about menopause, it happens to all of us. I was not impressed by the ignorance. There are not many medicines that help menopause, a GP ought to know all of them, and that includes the male ones. I daresay I will get another letter now about my literal violence to staff in daring to criticise this small-town GP surgery
The woman GP I had to go and see was very well informed about menopause. I take the Clonidine 3 tablets twice a day now and it has knocked my hot flushes on the head. I hope more women learn about alternatives to HRT, they do exist.
