"Child wet accidents"

About: Early Years Workers / Early Years Workers - Angus General practices in Tayside Health visiting / Angus Health Visiting

(as a parent/guardian),

We started working with an early years worker after being referred by our health visitor due to our daughter being flawlessly toilet trained just before she turned 3 then suddenly once she was just over the age of 3 she was having constant wet accidents, which had us baffled.

We tried retraining her using all the methods, rewarding with stickers, the odd tonie for dry days/weeks, naked at home, always having a travel potty but the accidents were every day.

After working with early years worker we started a pee diary which then led to a poo diary, to realise although our daughter wasn’t showing signs of being constipated on the toilet, her poos were in fact constipated poos, a poo traffic jam was most likely the reason for the wet accidents so spoke to GP and she was prescribed laxatives, this is definitely clearing her poo out and we all hope will take the pressure off her bladder and stop the wet accidents. She is still on laxatives for the time being.

We expressed to health visitor and early years worker that our main concern for her was beginning school next summer and there still being wet accidents happening, they both assured us that they will help to the best of their abilities for this not to be the case.

We are so grateful for all the help as we would never have looked at constipation being the cause!

Dear Clap43,

Thank you for sharing your experience on Care Opinion. I am pleased to hear that working with our early years worker and following the detailed observations has helped identify the underlying cause. It’s great to know that the use of a diary provided valuable insights, leading to the appropriate treatment.

It’s reassuring to hear that both the health visitor and early years worker are committed to supporting her as she prepares for school. We understand how important this transition is for both her and your family, and we will continue to do everything we can to support you through this process.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need further assistance or guidance. I will ensure your feedback is shared with the relevant teams so they are aware of the positive impact their support has had. Thank you once again for taking the time to share your story, and I wish you and your daughter all the best moving forward.

Kind regards

Jodie Gunn, Senior Nurse
