"There was no privacy whatsoever"

About: Gynaecology / Gynaecology Suite

(as the patient),

Whilst enduring a miscarriage, unfortunately I had to attend the gynae service at Ninewells Hospital. This turned an exceptionally difficult time into an horrific experience for myself and partner.

Even although I was bleeding, very obviously distressed, I was put into a tiny waiting room full of other people. There was no privacy whatsoever, everyone could see I was upset and bleeding as I was dripping blood. There was one toilet right at the waiting room, which also afforded no privacy.

After waiting for some time, I was even more distressed when another patient walked in with a baby in a pram and a toddler, the baby was crying and the toddler running about spilling the jug of water that was out for patients.

I understand this is a triage area but feel it is totally inappropriate for women who are losing a pregnancy to be subjected to this and it is certainly not appropriate for other people and their children to witness me in a distressed state. The toddler kept asking their mother - why is that lady crying? Which caused further distress and anxiety to both myself and my husband.

Dear hekanp76,

Thank so much for taking time to provide feedback, especially at what must be a difficult time for you and your family. Please accept my condolences for your loss. I am so sorry that your experience of miscarriage care lacked privacy and dignity, it is not the experience and care we strive to deliver. Please be assured that your feedback is of value and is helpful in supporting us to improve services and the environment within NHS Tayside. I understand that you may not feel able to reach out at present but if you would like to discuss this matter further or be directly involved in service user feedback to improve miscarriage services. I would be happy to meet you to discuss. Please feel free to contact me claire.massey@nhs.scot. Best wishes Claire Massey (Lead Midwife NHS Tayside)
