"No care or compassion shown"

About: University Hospital Monklands / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My mother-in-law recently attended A&E via ambulance. She has alzheimer's and was agitated and can become aggressive. We were advised she would be seen in triage and not have to sit in the very busy waiting area due to her agitation. However,  she was seen in triage and then advised she would have to sit back in the waiting area.

The manner in which this was communicated to us by the A&E staff nurse was inappropriate and had a very angry and aggressive tone.

We can absolultely appreciate the volume of patients that were in the department was unprecedented and that the staff are working in very stressful conditions and in a system that is over stretched. I believe the information that the nurse provided was factually correct  but there are ways and means of communicating.

There was no care or compassion shown in this encounter but rather it  left us with an impression that my mother-in-law was a burden.

Dear bluemp66,

Thank you for sharing your experience at University Hospital Monklands, Emergency Department.

I am disappointed to hear about your mother in law's recent visit and the incorrect information that you were given about her then having to sit in the waiting area following triage. I am also disappointed to read about the tone in which the nurse communicated this to you. Despite how busy the department is, we still expect a high level of compassion when dealing with patients and their families.

If you would like us to look into this further please could I ask that you contact our Patient Affairs team on the below email address who will be able take further details and provide you with a personal response.

I hope your mother in law is feeling better now.

Best Wishes,

Jenni
