"I was very impressed by the quiet efficiency and professionalism"

About: Victoria Hospital / Colorectal Unit Victoria Hospital / General Surgery Victoria Hospital / Surgical High Dependency

(as the patient),

I was admitted recently for robotic surgery to excise cancer in my rectum. I was quite nervous about the operation as there were two or three different outcomes possible, depending on what the surgeon found during the procedure. Many staff that were to be present in the operating theatre visited me prior to the operation and I felt that I was listened to, and that my views on the desirability of each of the outcomes were taken in to account.

I have nothing but praise for all the team involved in the surgery - the surgeon and registrar (Mr Koffeman and Mr Ugwu), the anaesthetists (Ross), robot operator and theatre nurses. I am delighted that the robot was used as I have had very little pain, I recovered very quickly and scarring is minimal.

Following the operation I spent a night and day in the HDU and was very well looked after by Lynn and Atif. After transferring to ward 44 I was looked after by Jackie's colorectal team and again I found everyone very caring and encouraging, it appeared to be a well run and happy team, with everyone knowing/doing their job well. I was soon on my feet and walking around a wee bit with their help.

The stoma nurse, Lindsay, soon visited and helped me cope with my ileostomy bag, showing me how to change it and giving lots of friendly advice to help minimise the impact it will have. Jayne and Wendy, the recovery nurses visited me frequently as well to check on my progress and give advice and tips to ensure that my recovery was as quick and smooth as possible. Jayne followed this up with a couple of phone calls once I got home, It is reassuring to know that they are all available for advice should I need it.

Overall I was very impressed by the quiet efficiency and professionalism shown by all staff who cared for me - as well as their kindness and empathy.

I was discharged 6 days later with no worries about how I would get on.
