"My dad's care"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department Northern Ireland Ambulance Service / Emergency ambulance response

(as a relative),

My Dad had taken ill, which led me to call for an ambulance. After a paramedic had arrived and done all the right checks we took him to A&E as the paramedic felt that there was something going on and he needed checked out. (I am so forever grateful he made that choice.)

So after sitting waiting all night from 11:30pm, he finally got the call to go and get checked (by a nurse). It was not until around 9 when we finally found out as much as his blood test results. It was an advanced Nurse practitioner that attended dad that morning. I can’t remember her name, but was absolutely fantastic. Told us dad’s blood results, immediately started asking all the relevant questions done all the blood tests/cultures arranged for an x-ray which was very prompted. Her care and attention towards my dad and I’m sure all her other patients was exceptional. She truly is a star.

The real problem I had was the infection control issues that was in the cubicle my dad was in. A used cotton ball was on the sink, no soap at the sink, there was used oxygen masked and a suctioning tube still there that was used. As well as a few other infection control issues that I had noticed when in with my dad.

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience of the care your father received in CAH ED. Firstly I wish to apologize for the long wait which you father had to be assessed by the ED Doctor/ ANP

Thank you for highlighting the excellent care your father received from the ANP who assessed him. I will share your kind words with the team.

I wish to apologize that the room which your father was assessed in was not cleaned correctly prior to him being placed there. Cubicles should be cleaned and restocked with new equipment after each use and it is unacceptable that this did not happen. I will share this experience with the ED team to ensure that all cubicles are left appropriately for the next patient.

Stacey
