"Aftercare after hip replacement"

About: Allied Health Professionals / Orthopaedic Physiotherapy General practices in Tayside

(as the patient),

I recently underwent a hip replacement at Inverness.

I was released the following day and have had little support and aftercare put in place.

My operation was on my right hip and, eight weeks on, my right knee is swollen and very sore, and has been since the operation, my operated leg is substantially longer than my other leg, and I have a limp.

I had to contact NHS physiotherapists myself, also for aftercare equipment such as shower stool, grabber etc.

I purchased a zimmer myself.

Trying to get appointments with GPs is so frustrating.

When I did eventually get through to my GP, I was told the system would be down for a few days, and to phone back.

On phoning back, and still in severe pain, I was told to get a blood test to see if there was any infection. I had to wait a further 10 days for this test.

After a week, I had not heard from my GP re the results, so went into the surgery.

The receptionist told me there was no infection.

So that is where I am now … I feel abandoned, isolated, vulnerable and badly let down.

After being advised many times this is a major operation, why is there such a lack of aftercare?

Dear Ferrymanblues

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about your General Practice (GP) and your general aftercare. Feedback is very valuable to all areas of the NHS, and I am sorry to hear that your experience there has not been positive. Unfortunately, GP practices are not part of Care Opinion at this time, as each GP Practice is an independent business. So that they can see your feedback, we would recommend that you feedback your experience directly to the practice to allow this to be passed on to the staff. The Practice Manager can give you details of how to provide this feedback to them, as per their Complaints and Feedback Policy.

As stated above feedback is very valuable to all areas of NHS Tayside as we are committed to delivering compassionate high-quality care, therefore in relation to your concerns about your aftercare and as Care Opinion is anonymous we ask that you share your details with the Patient Experience Team so that they can investigate this further. You can contact them on email Tay.feedback@nhs.scot or leave a message on freephone 0800 027 5507 and a member of the team will call you.

Kind regards

Susan Anderson
