My child was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 4. It was a scary time. I didn't know anything about diabetes and I had a lot to learn quickly. I was terrified that I wouldn't be able to manage the condition for him as he was so young. There was also the worry that I would do something wrong and harm him. The future was uncertain; I had so many questions like how will he manage at school, who will look after him when I am at work, will he be able to go to birthday parties; the worry was endless.
The northern trust paediatric diabetes team were fantastic. They were there every step of the way with advice, training, help and support. They help with school and are always there when you need them. They are also genuinely nice people. My child is now going to big school and is healthy and doing well. We wouldn't of survived through these years without the help of the diabetes team. We are truly grateful to them all.
