"A mixed experience"

About: Carseview Centre / Ward 1 Community Mental Health Services / Angus Discharge Team Community Mental Health Services / South East Hub

(as a carer),

My husband suffered a complete breakdown which resulted in him being admitted to a Mental Health Hospital.  He spent 11 weeks there, slowly recovering.  He has been home now for almost 3 months but is not at all himself.  Low mood, paranoia, low self esteem and lack of motivation.

He is receiving support from CMHT which will be on going.

Beth - Carse View Discharge Team

The support my husband received from the worker on the discharge team was extremely useful and very welcome.  It helped my husband to have this support at home after leaving the care facility after such a prolonged stay.

Beth was very understanding, had insight into how we both felt and was able to suggest and encourage my husband to help himself move on.

The six week follow up visits were very reassuring and helpful but we feel another couple of weeks would have been beneficial. I wish we had been able to work with Beth in more depth before my husbands discharge, I think we would have felt a bit more secure with knowledge about coping strategies and what to expect once he was back in the family home.

Beth was very understanding of the pressure I was under and referred me into a Carer's Centre where I am now receiving support. It's made a big difference to me knowing I am not alone.

Carse View -

Negative points -

1. Being shown into a meeting with the consultant without being told there would be 5 other people in the room.  This left my husband completely confused and unable to communicate. I would like to think this was an oversight but we were already feeling very vulnerable and this did nothing to ease that.

2. Lack of communication from staff with discharge team which resulted in Beth, my husbands worker, being late for meetings or not knowing about our meeting.  I'm sure with better communication and planning that could have been avoided.

3. No psychological support available from either a psychologist or psychiatrist. Whilst the nursing staff do their best, these patients who are extremely unwell need professional psychological help. It's very hard to understand why a facility such as Carse View has no such support.

Positive points -

1. Staff on the ward were always on hand to answer any questions we had or help me understand the medication.

2. Staff did genuinely care for the patients and did their best to cater for their individual needs.

CMHT - Angus

My husband has had a couple of meetings and phone calls with his mental health worker as well as an advanced nurse practitioner. These meetings are of value to my husband but we feel meeting his worker every fortnight is simply not enough. We both understand the stretch on resources and time within the service but service users like my husband would benefit greatly from meeting weekly, at least for a few months, after discharge from hospital.

Dear Ballater

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience following your husband's admission and discharge from Ward 1 Carseview. We truly appreciate your openness and honesty, and we are deeply sorry for the distress you or your husband family endured during this challenging time.

We are heartened to hear that Beth, from our Discharge Team, provided meaningful and compassionate support to both you and your husband. I am sure her team will respond to your comments and ensure Beth is aware of your feedback.

My sincerely apologise for the distress caused during the consultant meeting and for the lack of clarity and preparation around the number of attendees. I will ensure this feedback is shared with the clinical team who can review processes to ensure that patients and families are better informed and supported during such meetings.

The communication gaps between ward staff and the discharge team are disappointing, and we appreciate you bringing this to our attention. We will explore how to improve coordination across teams to ensure smoother transitions and more consistent support.

Regarding psychological support, we recognise the importance of access to a Psychologist. While our nursing staff are dedicated and skilled, we understand that psychological care is a vital component of recovery. Your feedback will be shared with our senior leadership team to support ongoing discussions about service development and resource allocation.

We are also grateful for your recognition of the ward staff’s dedication and responsiveness. It means a great deal to our team to know that their efforts to provide compassionate care were felt and appreciated.

Thank you again for your thoughtful reflections. Your voice helps us improve, and we are committed to learning from your experience to better support patients and families in the future.

Hi Ballater

I appreciate you taking the time to provide such helpful feedback and am very sorry to hear about your husbands mental health difficulties and imagine this has been a very difficult time for you both.

I am the Team Manager for the Discharge hub in Carseview and I was so heartened to read your feedback regarding Beth's role in your husbands care and also in supporting you in your caring role. I will ensure this this feedback is shared with Beth. It is so wonderful to hear that the support she has provided has made such a positive difference for both of you.

I can understand your disappointment about the support from the discharge team only being for a 6 week period and that you and your husband would have appreciated a longer period of support. Currently we provide 6 weeks as standard as it allows for a period to settle back home and for the community mental health team to then start providing their support, but I fully appreciate that in some cases, individuals might benefit from a longer period. We will consider your feedback when reviewing our processes regarding post discharge support.

I am reassured that Beth recognised the importance of your role in caring for your husband and made a referral to the Carers Centre and this has been beneficial for you. This can be a lifeline for many carers and I am so glad that you have been able to get support around this.

I hope that your husband continues to recover and am very thankful for your feedback which helps us to improve and develop the service that we offer. I will ensure that Beth receives this positive feedback and knows that her role has made a difference in you an your husbands lives.

I wish you both all the best and thank you once again.

Dear Ballater

My name is Helen Bremner and I am the Clinical Team Manager for the South Angus Community Mental Health Team. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your husband's experience about my team. I am pleased that the appointments with both his worker and Advanced Nurse Practitioner have provided benefit, this kind of feedback is really appreciated by the team.

I absolutely agree that tailoring the frequency of contact to suit your husband's recovery is key, and I am keen to discussing this further. This type of feedback ensures he receives the care that’s responsive and meaningful to his needs. I wonder if you both would be able to speak to his worker to discuss this or alternatively you are welcome to give me a phone to support conversations with his specific worker. My telephone number is 01241 465558.

Thank you for your feedback and to continue to improve the support we deliver I will ensure your feedback is shared with the wider team.

Wishing you both all the best.

Helen
