"They provided such care, encouragement and confidence"

About: Downe Community Services / Community Rehab Team

(as a relative),

My Dad is in his 90s, and had been living independently fell and broke his leg in April this year. After 5 weeks in between 3 hospitals he eventually got home.

He was very weak and despite the best efforts of the team he was unable to regain the strength to stand and regain mobility.. However it was his dearest wish to be able to sit out of bed in a chair and hopefully eventually in a wheel chair.

The rehabilitation team worked hard to get a hoist into his home and then after changing his bedroom so it was easier to move the hoist Dad was able to get out to sit. It was tiring for him and the two staff, Oran OT and Angela assistant provided such care, encouragement and confidence. Gradually Dad was able to build up his sitting tolerance so that now the carers will be able to get him up everyday if he wishes.

This has given him a sense of independence and dignity and encouraged him to continue trying to build up his strength. Mentally for him it has been such a positive step in his adapting to his new situation.

A huge thanks to this excellent team, who worked with us  his family, helping us to adapt his environment to make this happen

Hi Rachel MD

I apologise for the delay in replying; I thought I had responded shortly after your post, but I now realise my response was never added to the site.

I am sorry to hear of the difficulties your father faced after breaking his leg. Unfortunately it is not uncommon for people to lose some or all of their mobility after this type of injury. It is good to hear that the team was able to support your father to achieve his goal of sitting out of bed and that this has provided him a level of independence.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with the service. I have shared your kind words with the staff involved which they really appreciated.
