"A cancer journey or two."

About: General practices in Fife Victoria Hospital / Urology

(as the patient),

Just over a year ago I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. It was picked up very quickly after my GP became a little concerned about my PSA level. The outcome was being placed on what is called active surveillance which means I receive regular blood checks and annual CT scan. The cancer has not spread and so far I have not needed any particular treatment. However at my recent scan It was picked up that I had a suspicious area within my bladder. I was referred for a cystoscopy which involves inserting a camera into the bladder via the urethra. Not the most pleasant procedure but on the other hand quite pain free. The result confirmed a tumour. A matter of only a few weeks later I was admitted to the Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy, for a transurethral telescopic resection of a bladder tumour.  Effectively entering the bladder by the same means and scraping away the tumour but this time under general anaesthetic.  A sample was taken for analysis. However, in my case the complete tumour was successfully removed.  I await the result of the analysis but even although it is confirmed to be cancer, which I fully expect, my bladder is now tumour free.  Again it is likely I will be placed on active surveillance to quickly identify any recurrence.
The point of me writing this is to highlight the importance of getting a prostate check. In my case I will receive early treatment if I need it but it has also lead to identifying a completely different condition which has allowed for early intervention. I will be eternally grateful to my GP and to the NHS in general for the care and treatment I have received of late.  The hospital staff could not have been more caring and diligent in the way they have looked after me. I have absolutely no doubt that my life expectancy will be enhanced as a consequence.  The NHS has my sincere gratitude.

Dear Hi Ho Silver

Thank you so much for sharing your story regarding your personal experiences of prostate and bladder cancer. It is good to hear that your prostate cancer seems under control and also that the bladder tumour has been completely removed, I am sure you will be relieved with this result.

As you have mentioned, it is very important to have any issues checked out early, this allows for early intervention and treatments. Your feedback may empower others to do just that.

It is very reassuring to know how all the staff you have encountered could not have been more caring and diligent, it is always lovely to know how we have helped and made a difference to patients under our care.

I look forward to sharing your feedback with our teams, and will also display your comments on our department whiteboard for everyone to read.

Best wishes with your ongoing care and treatment.

Jackie
