Just over a year ago I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. It was picked up very quickly after my GP became a little concerned about my PSA level. The outcome was being placed on what is called active surveillance which means I receive regular blood checks and annual CT scan. The cancer has not spread and so far I have not needed any particular treatment. However at my recent scan It was picked up that I had a suspicious area within my bladder. I was referred for a cystoscopy which involves inserting a camera into the bladder via the urethra. Not the most pleasant procedure but on the other hand quite pain free. The result confirmed a tumour. A matter of only a few weeks later I was admitted to the Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy, for a transurethral telescopic resection of a bladder tumour. Effectively entering the bladder by the same means and scraping away the tumour but this time under general anaesthetic. A sample was taken for analysis. However, in my case the complete tumour was successfully removed. I await the result of the analysis but even although it is confirmed to be cancer, which I fully expect, my bladder is now tumour free. Again it is likely I will be placed on active surveillance to quickly identify any recurrence. The point of me writing this is to highlight the importance of getting a prostate check. In my case I will receive early treatment if I need it but it has also lead to identifying a completely different condition which has allowed for early intervention. I will be eternally grateful to my GP and to the NHS in general for the care and treatment I have received of late. The hospital staff could not have been more caring and diligent in the way they have looked after me. I have absolutely no doubt that my life expectancy will be enhanced as a consequence. The NHS has my sincere gratitude.
"A cancer journey or two."
