"I had to undergo a "Bronchoscopy""

About: Belfast City Hospital / Endoscopy Unit Respiratory medicine / Belfast City Hospital Respiratory Team

(as the patient),

I was greeted by the very friendly staff at the Endoscopy Department at the  Belfast City Hospital and I was introduced to a nurse who was going to check my details and  explain the procedure I was going to have. I must admit I was a bit nervous, but the nurse with her both friendly and professional approach made me feel at ease, she explained everything thoroughly, inviting me to ask questions on anything I wasn't sure about.

After a short wait, a doctor introduced herself to me explaining she would be involved in the procedure and then I was led into to room where the procedure was to take place. I was pleasantly surprised to discover Dr Bradley was also there. Dr Bradley has been looking after me since I was referred to her following a discovery during a recent Virtual Colonoscopy.  I would like to add that I have  had the privilege of working at the City Hospital for approx' 22 years  and I was always impressed by the professionalism of the medical staff, in fact of all staff. As an ex porter, I have brought many patients to and from surgery and on the way to theatres have  always tried to reassure them that they were in the best of hands as they were obviously nervous. Thinking back, I can now understand how they must have felt, because it's different when it's you on the receiving end.

However, I needed have worried at all, the whole team were outstanding throughout the whole  procedure, providing both  reassurance and comfort. They made sure I was as comfortable the whole way through the procedure. After the procedure, I was brought to the recovery area and again the staff made sure I was comfortable. After a while  one of the staff spoke with me again explaining that I would cough up some blood but this was normal and also advising me not to drive. I was then discharged into the care of my daughter who drove me home.

Hi Startc44

Thank you for lovely words and for taking time to let us know that you felt the whole team were outstanding throughout your whole procedure providing both reassurance and comfort. It is also a pleasure to hear that you found our staff friendly and professional.

As you know from working in the trust that the first impression are the most important. You yourself as an ex porter would have played a significant role talking to patients at their most vulnerable time and reassuring them.

I am delighted the nurses with their friendly and professional approach made you feel at ease, and that you felt that your whole journey was explained to you thoroughly and you had the opportunity to ask questions on anything you weren't sure about.

And I am sure you felt more at ease when you saw Dr Bradley as seeing a face you recognised will always add that extra comfort.

Thanks again for your positive feedback and I will pass on this on to the team.

Regards,

Angelina
