About: General practices in Lanarkshire Maternity Care / Labour Ward Maternity Care / Maternity Triage University Hospital Wishaw / Maternity Care

(as the patient),

I went into triage with stomach pain when 33 weeks and doctor told me my infection markers were up but told me it was fine and that it’s probably constipation, the pain got worse and and I phoned triage again and they said to phone doctors so on the 4th day I phoned doctors when feeling my tummy they said you are in pain but told me it was constipation again.

After a week and a half I went to triage again and the doctor said that I am text book symptoms of appendicitis. I was then kept in for 9 days, and because I hadn't been treated my appendicitis turned into an abscess and I got sepsis.

When being kept in I could hear midwives talking about me and that I shouldn’t be on that ward which really triggered me, they kept telling me I might be moving which got me upset as I was so vulnerable. I had to get a colostomy bag as they couldn’t operate on me and had to go daily trips to hospital for antibiotics until my son was born.

I felt let down by triage and GP as I could’ve lost my baby and my life if my abscess had ruptured, I don’t think I was taken seriously because I was heavily pregnant . Some staff were amazing and the care when I was in labour was great, I can’t fault them for that. But I do think staff need to be mindful about talking about patients outside their door when there in such a vulnerable state.

Dear KatCra4,

Thank you for sharing your experience of University Hospital Wishaw, Maternity Care and your GP.

I am so sorry to hear about the treatment you received when you presented with stomach pains. I am also sorry that the GP appears to have been dismissive of your concerns. I can only imagine how worrying and frustrating this must have been for you.

If you would like us to investigate this further, and provide you with a personal response, then please contact our Patient Affairs department on the below email. Unfortunately GP practices are independant contractors and therefore if you wanted to highlight your concerns about the GP then please contact the Practice Manager to discuss this further.

patientaffairs@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk

I hope you are feeling better.

Best Wishes,

Jenni
