"Anxious about having more babies going forward"

About: Maternity care / 2 West Maternity Maternity care / Delivery suite

(as a service user),

I delivered my baby boy in Craigavon area hospital after booking in daisy hill hospital (due to gestational diabetes). My waters had been broke for almost 2 and a half days before my baby was delivered due to constant emergencies being taken into Craigavon and our case being pushed back, as a result of this my baby was born with signs of serious infection and needed to stay in hospital for 7 days receiving two IV antibiotics and had a 48 hour stay in the special care baby unit.

This all could have been avoided if he had been delivered within the 24 hour window that is meant to be set for ruptured membranes.

Even though I was spiking temperatures I was not put onto a course of antibiotics as an inpatient, I was given iv paracetamol to lower my temperature.

My episiotomy stitches had opened as an inpatient and despite asking midwives to check them on 3 different occasions nobody did, I ended up having to go to the assessment unit in daisy hill when I got home from hospital and being put on antibiotics.

This was my first baby and it has made me quite anxious about having another.

Firstly congratulations on the birth of your baby, I hope you and your baby are doing well. Many thanks for taking the time to respond, we do welcome all feedback to help us improve the service we offer.

I am extremely saddened to read of your experience in Craigavon Maternity Unit. It is normal protocol to induce labour 24 hours after waters break. The reason for doing this is to reduce the risk of any infection to you or your baby. I am sorry that in your case there was a delay in the process and that the number of emergencies within the department prohibited your transfer to delivery suite. The trust does have a sepsis protocol that clearly sets out the actions required in response to mother's temperature. I am sorry if this protocol was not adhered to in your case and if this contributed to your baby's prolonged hospital stay and admission to the Neonatal Unit.

Furthermore, I am disappointed to learn that your concerns raised regarding your stitches were not addressed. This falls well below the standard of care we aim to provide in the Southern Trust. It would be normal practice that women would be offered an inspection of their stitches on a daily basis whilst in hospital.

if you would like to discuss any aspects of your care, please contact me via email on oonagh.campbellkelly@southerntrust.hscni.net and I will happily assist you with any queries.

Regards

Oonagh Campbell Kelly
