"Attending x-ray department"

About: Causeway Hospital / Acute Assessment Unit Causeway Hospital / Radiology

(as the patient),

I attended AAU where a CTPA was requested for me. My experience in AAU was a great experience. Friendly and efficient staff. I had a cannula inserted and a short time later I attended the xray department for my CT. The staff member who called me for my scan was polite. On checking my cannula to make sure it was working, they had no gloves on and did not cleanse my hub, this was also in the presence of a student, not best practice and not teaching the right way as per trust policy.

I am sorry to hear of your experience when you attended the CT department in Causeway Hospital. I will ensure this feedback is shared with the staff in the department, so improvements can be made. Many thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Hello lyrasm36,

My name is Gerard McCrickard and I am the Site Lead Radiographer for Causeway Radiology Department. Thank you for talking the time to leave feedback, we do use this format to try to improve our service and to make it the best it can be and learn from experiences. I am very sorry to hear of your poor experience which you encountered while in the X-ray department.

The experience which you describe does not meet the quality standards which I would expect to be upheld within the department nor reflect the good training our students should receive. I have discussed this matter with the CT lead radiographers and will remind all staff in the department at our next staff meeting. This will be monitored closely within the CT department and actions put in place to ensure cannula's are wiped clean before use and gloves are used at all times during these CT examinations.

Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience

Yours Sincerely

Following on from feedback received, we have added an audit of cannula prep within CT alongside our monthly hand hygiene audit. This Cannula prep audit will reassure good practice to management and allow feedback given at the monthly staff meetings.
