"Insensitive staff approach"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

Following a terrible loss of a relative within the accident and emergency part of wishaw hospital.

We experienced excellent emergency care and empathetic care. Thank you to the staff that spent time with us. Such an eye opener to see behind the doors of the waiting room and the immense pressures the doctors and nurses were working under.

However, I feel that in such an area of medicine those higher up need to consider the age or life experience of staff involved in the follow up.

We were told very sensitively that despite all efforts and treatment it was unlikely that our relative would survive and everything was now being done to make them as comfortable as possible. However, following the passing of our dearly beloved we were swiftly approached by a young staff member and hastily asked if we had considered organ donation.

I understand that this was something that may be time-critical but found the approach extremely insensitive. I would therefore like to help by suggesting that either more senior staff members or at least staff with more life experience be allocated this role in future.

Very clear all staff were giving their upmost to provide the best care, but families should not only be allowed to grieve, but be provided the same respect. This experience is not down to bad nursing or care from the staff, but bad management involvement.

Dear maydd67,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience following the recent loss of your loved one at University Hospital Wishaw’s Emergency Department. Please accept our deepest condolences on your bereavement.

We are truly grateful for your kind words about the emergency care and compassion shown by our team during such a difficult time. Your recognition of the pressures our staff work under, and your appreciation of their efforts, means a great deal to us.

We are, however, very sorry to hear that the approach taken regarding organ donation felt insensitive. While we understand the importance and urgency of these conversations, we also recognise that timing, tone, and the manner in which they are conducted are crucial—especially in moments of profound grief.

Your feedback has been shared with the senior nursing and medical teams, and we will reflect carefully on your suggestion that such sensitive discussions be handled by more experienced staff. We are committed to learning from this and ensuring that all families are treated with the utmost respect and compassion at every stage of their journey with us.

Thank you again for helping us improve the care we provide.

With sincere thanks and sympathy,

Julie.
