"Second Trimester Loss of Twin Girls"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Ward 43 Gynaecology FAU/EPAU (Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit) Maternity care / Maternity Royal Jubilee Maternity services

(as the patient),

In October 2024 I found out I was pregnant, having previously suffered two miscarriages I was delighted, but very anxious.

I went for private scans to ensure everything was ok, at 7 weeks I found out I was pregnant with identical twins and we were ecstatic.

During the first trimester I had a bit of spotting, and due to my past history I was very anxious things where going wrong.

I attended the Early Pregnancy Unit a few times, who always put my mind at ease with scans of the twins.

Everything was going great and I was put under the care of Dr Glackin.

At my 16 week scan, things took a turn for the worse and sadly Dr Glackin was worried about the blood flow to twin 2.

I was referred to the Royals Fetal Medicine Unit for a more in depth scan to see what was going on.

Sadly this scan showed that there was no heartbeats. We were completely devastated.

The staff at the Royal were very nice, and explained the next steps to me.

We came back home and the next day met with Dr Glackin, who gave me a tablet to start the miscarriage and I was admitted to Ward 43 the following morning.

The care and attention I received whilst delivering my twins was great and I would like to thank all the staff who helped me during my stay.

My beautiful twin girls were delivered and we got to spend 24 hours with them before they were sent to Liverpool for Postmortems.

I was kept updated about their journey from the start until they arrived back home with me.

Although the heartbreak is very difficult, I cannot fault Dr Glackin, Yusef and all the staff at Ward 43 for the care and support that I received during this difficult time.

Also, a special word of thanks also to Nikita the bereavement midwife for her support.

Dear sazc00

I want to offer my sincere condolences on the loss of your babies and thank you for taking the time to post about your experience of your loss, this was both courageous and a true testimony of how supportive and caring staff can make a very heart breaking, emotional and difficult journey, that little more bearable.

Loss of a pregnancy can be extremely difficult and I will be sure too pass to your thanks to the staff for the care and support you received. I have no doubts this will provide comfort and reassurance to other woman whom may find themselves in similar positions.

Leanne
