"Being let down for a surgery"

About: Omagh Primary Care Complex / Pre-op assessment

(as the patient),

I was given a last Minute cancellation for a surgery I have been waiting around 18 years for. I got the phone call a week ago and was asked did I want to go for it I would have to travel to omagh hospital for the procedure from Derry, so of course I said yes.

I went through medication and that on the phone to the staff member and they asked is my bmi ok I said no I would be seen as morbidly obese, however, they continued to go ahead with their appointment.

My husband took the day off work unpaid to take me as I don’t drive and when I arrived, they started to preop going through medication taking my blood pressure and the anaesthetist walked towards me and asked me my weight and bmi and as soon as he knew my bmi he said there and then no surgery for you, I’m sorry it’s too high we only do surgery under 35 and I did cry because I have lost nearly 6 stone this year and my bmi has only come down 4 so I asked them why did they offer me the appointment as they have had my bmi and weight on my files and notes but still offered me the appointment.

It was ridiculous that I had to prepare myself mentally for the procedure as I suffer with extreme anxiety as it is and I was on the road from 6:15 to be up there and to be told no. I understand the risks and why they said no but I think that notes should have been checked and it shouldn’t have been offered if it wasn’t going to go ahead with as sacrifices were made to get me there.

Dear Sc37,

My name is Michelle Scott Patient Client Experience Lead for the Trust. My apologies for the late reply, I was liaising with staff within pre-op assessment which we believe is the service who spoke to you over the phone. please see their response below:

"Hello Sc37, thank you for taking the time to leave your story. Whilst I was glad to read you were offered a cancellation appointment for a surgery you had been waiting on, I was disappointed to learn it was then cancelled on the day of surgery. There appeared to be miscommunication when booking. I am sorry for the inconvenience this has caused you and your husband who took time off work to be with you and the distress in regards to BMI.

There are guidelines that must be adhered to for patient safety and I can only apologise again for the miscommunication and inconvenience this has caused. From your story it is unclear of next steps if any, therefore I would like to extend an invite to contact me in confidence if you would like to discuss further. contact numbers are: 02871345171 ext. 214076 / 213533. kind regards Carla"

kind regards

Michelle Scott
