"Hospital Transportation call handler"

About: Scottish Ambulance Service / Patient Transport Service

(as a service user),

I rely on the ambulance service for transportation as a wheel chair user who is immunocompromised I have to travel alone. I would love firstly to praise the men and women who pick me up from my door and drop me at various appointments across South Lanarkshire. I am so grateful.

However, I recently had a problem with a call handler. After a long morning and a diagnosis I was not expecting. The Ambulance had waited for me The Dr sent me for medication to the chemist the receptionist called me ready to the ambulance service and asked for them to collect me at the pharmacy. The lovely lady popped her head in and waved. When I exited no one is there I waiting a significant amount of time and decided to go to front door confused that no one was around I called the service to be informed they where sent on an emergency, ok he had a pop at me not being ready. I have no control of the receptionist !

Went back up which is some distance from the door as he could not mark me as ready the receptionist at urology had to do that .. I repeatedly asked if he would mark it and was told no ! Returned all the way to urology which was closed. Phoned again you must see someone but I did not she was away for lunch. He eventually agreed that he could mark me ready but stay there in the clinic and don’t move when I asked if I could go to the food place he again insisted no i sat for hours with no medication or food and drink punished for something I did not do .. eventually a kind nurse got me a drink and went to a ward to get me a sandwich.

No phone call to say they had been called away his attitude on the phone was ridiculous ..I used the service last week and the coffee shop was fine. I feel like a nuisance as is having to ask for transport. If his intention was to make me feel guilty for wasting ambulance transport time he succeeded congratulations and job well done .. I had hours of tests and a few shocks from the consultant. His attitude sucked. Eventually when the new crew came to pick me up and saw the nurse feeding me and I asked he said yes we pick people up from there all the time. So all the running about and staying in clinic I guess was because the poor receptionist made a mistake.

Again I would like to reiterate the fantastic job the crew do .. I could not manage from my house to the hospital without them. They are always helpful with my wheelchair and have a cheerful disposition. So thank you

The attitude from the call handlers at Lanarkshire was horrendous. I’ve to go back and I really don’t know if I will ask for a telephone consultation. I don’t understand what I personally did to annoy this man. I am worried about what he has written in my records with them.
