"A&E Ulster"

About: The Ulster Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

In with my 9 year old son for emergency surgery via a&e . He has special needs and was pertrified. A wonderful speciality doctor called Caoimhe in a&e saved what had been a very stressful situtaion up to that point. We cannot describe the relief of her being aware to take her time with him, adapt procedures for him, explain things at a very simple level, not pinning him down, not presuming a level of understanding based on age. She worked with him rather than trying to drag him along. He was still asking for her the next day on the surgical ward. Please pass on our thanks to her.

On a seperate note would you please reconsider reintroducing the quiet sensory waiting area for children with additional needs. The main waiting room in a&e where everyone waits was busy/loud/scary for him and not appropriate for children generally with some of the ongoings.

Hi nells82

Thank you for taking the time to tell us of your and your son's experience when attending ED. I appreciate your kind comments around how Caoimhe interacted with your son, it is reassuring to hear the feedback and she will really appreciate your comments.

We do still have our quiet sensory room in our Children's area of ED which is usually open between 07:30 and 00:00. Closing time can vary occasionally depending on staffing. It is an excellent area that is used frequently. I agree that the main waiting area is not appropriate for children and staff do consider at other options where possible when the children's area is not open.

I hope your son is recovering well.

Kind Regards

Jenny
