"My husband has settled well with the right accommodation"

About: Adult Health & Support Services / Hospital Social Work Team Udston Hospital / Old age psychiatry

(as a service user),

My husband was admitted to Hairmyres hospital in February this year. He was extremely agitated with his dementia.

He became slightly aggressive trying to leave the ward. They moved him to a single room and things went downhill fast. He was confined to the room with 2 mental health nurses. They could have taken him a walk along the corridor but they didn't. His frustration built and he ended up wrecking the room and attacking staff.

I was broken-hearted. The consultant advised he would be better in Udston hospital. It took a good few weeks for him to settle but they did a fantastic job and got his medication sorted. 12 weeks later he was admitted to Abbey Dale and has settled really well.

Dear Sidewinder

I would like to sincerely thank you for taking the time and making the effort to share your experience and the experience of your husband on this platform. This is hugely valuable to be able to consider what has worked well and where things could have been better for both of you in regards to treatment and care.

I am truly sorry to hear about the distress you both have experienced, which I fully appreciate the environment and speciality of ward plays a major role.

I am however pleased that your husband received the appropriate support and input to ensure a move to Udston hospital and subsequent discharge planning has facilitated a move to a care facility to promote his longer term support needs to be met out with an acute ward setting. I am heartened to hear he has settled well and hope he continues to do well within the Care Home.

Best regards
