We recently received exceptional care from many NHS professionals when both my son and, later, my daughter unexpectedly became unwell with unrelated illnesses.
I want to express our deep gratitude for the outstanding service we experienced throughout.
Our journey began with paramedics Peter and Emma, based at the RAH ambulance station. Their care was truly exemplary. They went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and supported. Emma read stories to my daughter, while Peter engaged with my unwell son in such a calm, child-friendly way that he felt completely at ease despite being ill. They both used age-appropriate language and explained everything clearly, helping to reduce any anxiety. Their patience and use of distraction techniques—like fun glove balloons and a special hat—made a lasting impression. They are a real credit to the service. Thank you.
At A&E, the care continued to be professional and compassionate. The team communicated clearly at every step. A special mention to our nurse (possibly Euan), who provided a spot the llama game and went out of his way to show my son all the Julia Donaldson artwork—small gestures that made a big difference.
On Ward 2C, we were again met with kindness and professionalism. The ward was clean, well-organised, and the kitchen was well stocked. Particular thanks to:
Dr Coombe, who worked with a very grumpy little boy, demonstrating patience and care, and made sure I understood all the clinical decisions.
Student nurse Alexandra, who took such thoughtful care of my son —learning his preferences and even finding him a dairy-free ice lolly.
Narindar, the domestic, who not only kept the space spotless but brightened our days with her warm engagement.
When my daughter was admitted, we were again met with excellent care. Though we were later moved to Ward 3B, the (presumed) charge nurse who oversaw the transition was organised, kind, and clear in communication. On Ward 3B, we were especially grateful for student Eleanor, who won my daughter's trust with her patience and calmness. Thanks to her, my daughter went from crying during obs to helping hold the cables herself.
We are also immensely grateful to plastic surgeon Dr Harry. His calm, child-friendly approach put my daughter completely at ease. He explained everything clearly, took time to answer all our questions, and his gentle humour made the experience more manageable for all of us.
There were so many others involved in our care—play therapists who provided books and toys to pass the time; the people who organise the surgery/ theatre waiting room etc for playing with Mike Wasowski and making my daughter laugh before surgery; and Lisa the radiographer, who carefully explained the risk vs. benefit of the X-ray and ensured the procedure was as smooth and stress-free as possible. We also received exemplary care from the staff on 111 who directed us in a timely and appropriate manner.
I’m sorry if I’ve confused or missed any names—we are just so thankful to everyone who supported us during such a stressful time. Your care, professionalism, and kindness made a difficult situation much easier to manage. Thank you all.
