"Phone first service"

About: Accident & Emergency / Phone First

(as a service user),

Having sustained a bee sting that caused cellulitis , on the advice of a pharmacist we contacted Dalriada Doc and were prescribed medication. The area started to spread, so we contacted Dal Doc the next day and were prescribed tablets ( photos were sent of the are and spread  as requested).

The next day the area was tight, sore and more swollen so we went into a pharmacist and they recommended that we call Phone First for further advice and signposting to the correct service, minor injuries or ED.

We phoned the number and got to speak to a Nurse who told us that we should not have called them as they don’t have any access to Doctors!

The personnel need to be informed of the purpose of the service they are providing.

Hello Confuused patient

My name is Victoria McCrory and I am the Assistant Clinical Services Manager for Causeway ED. I am sorry to hear that you have recently been unwell and had to access out of hours care providers for advice/signposting.

From reading your concerns raised it would appear that the main concern is with the advice given by the phone first service and not the emergency department directly. If the concern is in regards to the phonefirst service then I would advise that you contact them to provide feedback, as all feedback is important in helping improve services and drive forward change.

If the concern is directly in regards to assessment or treatment in the emergency department; please reach out to me on my email address below and I can take this forward at department level.

Once again I am very sorry for the experience which you have encountered.

Yours Sincerely

Victoria McCrory
