"Waiting times"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Accident & emergency

(as a parent/guardian),

My son had surgery at UHW for a nasal cautery recently. On Saturday evening into Sunday morning he started with a severe nose bleed lasting over 1 hour. I contacted 111 who advised, due to him having recent surgery, that we should attend A&E.

When we arrived it was a 12 hour wait to be seen. Once being there for 8 hours my son began being violently sick which we informed the triage nurse of. A consultant then come out and told everyone in the waiting area it was now a 15 hour wait and they had no capacity to see anyone at present so if you could go home and be seen by your GP or minor injuries, to do so. We were finally seen 14 hours after arriving in which my son was checked over by a lovely doctor who could not have been any nicer. The nurse for triage who started in the morning was very nippy and unsympathetic of the situation.

To have an 8 year old boy lying on a floor for 14 hours post surgery with no checks in that time is horrific care.

Good evening,

I am sorry to hear of your negative experience in the Emergency Department. Unfortunately, the department has been under sustained pressures in recent times leading to periods of long waits to see a doctor, and for that we apologise. The department and wider board are continually looking at ways to improve our service and in turn deliver the highest standard of care for our service users.

I hope you son is now on the mend, and again can only apologise for you poor experience.

If you require further discussion, please do not hesitate to get in touch,

FV.ED-SCN@nhs.scot

Kind regards

Selene Connelly

Senior Charge Nurse

Emergency Department.
