"I feel as though the stuffing has been knocked out of me"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Colorectal surgery & stoma care

(as the patient),

I had an appointment at NDD Hospital Barnstaple in the Colorectal Surgery dept. I was told me that as I was in my 80s and had mobility problems, even if they found out there was something going wrong with me, they wouldn't do anything about because of those reasons.  I feel as though the stuffing has been knocked out of me, so why should I bother going on? I'm alone with no family, and am generally a happy person with lots of friends, but am appalled at the callous way I was treated, and wonder if this is now the way the NHS regards the aged.

I am so sorry to read that you have been left feeling this way. It is never the intention of any of the clinicians to leave patients feeling like this, but I appreciate what you are saying and can imagine how distressing it was for you. Their usual practice is to try and find the right balance between putting a patient through invasive investigations and managing symptoms and expectations. They usually like to discuss and come to a plan that both patient and clinician feel happy with.

Once again I am so sorry that you have been left feeling like this and if you feel you would be happy to give more specific details of your name etc we could investigate further.
