"Care in the Direct Assessment Unit, Antrim Hospital"

About: Antrim Area Hospital / Direct Assessment Unit

(as a relative),

My mum was recently admitted to the DAU with pneumonia. This was a very worrying time for our family, as she was so unwell. The care my mum received during her overnight admission, before transfer to the ward, was exceptional. The staff were attentive and respectful. They helped mum feel comfortable and cared for when she was feeling anxious. At a time when mum was vulnerable and scared, they talked with her, and helped her to understand what was happening.

For me, as a family member, the staff were very approachable and took time to answer all our questions. Lucy and Sheila went out of their way to make sure I was informed as to Mum's care as they completed their investigations. Nothing was too much trouble for them. They showed great care for me as a family member also. Natalie took the time to talk us through Mum's results, and what they meant. Niall (student nurse) showed great care for mum as he helped her with her dinner. There were other staff too, however, I can't recall all their names.

Overall, the staff took time. All of this made such a difference to our family at a time that was so worrying and stressful. We would like to say thank you so much for helping make Mum's hospital stay feel a little easier. This is an invaluable unit, which allowed Mum to access care without the need to go to the Emergency Department.
