Most of the time we only ever hear how terrible the NHS is.
My experience tells a different story of how NHS Ayrshire & Arran workers helped make my experience the best it could be.
4 years ago I had a colectomy for bowel cancer - all successful. As part of ongoing scans two years ago another ' lump' was spotted. Following various appointments it was decided to watch and monitor ( in association with NHS Glasgow & Clyde).
In May 2025 a scan showed the lump had grown. An appointment in June decided that surgery, another colectomy, was the best option. This was booked for the start of August.
From arrival at Crosshouse Hospital on the morning at the start of August, though to discharge from ward 4B, all NHS workers I encountered from cleaning staff to consultant were excellent. Putting my mind at ease, contacting family, even fetching me a coffee was done with a smile.
The nursing staff on the ward seemed to be really stretched looking after everyone but despite them being so busy their professionalism showed through. Even when a fellow patient became agitated and aggressive everything was handled and de- escalated in a professional manner.
My especial thanks the Mr Khine and his team along with Ann, Jan, Sam & McKenzie on ward 4B.
We cannot allow our NHS to be diminished.
